Better Bones Coffee Meet-Up Recap: The Fall Prevention Formula – Building Power, Balance & Stability

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our second Better Bones Coffee Meet-Up at Pure Movement! We enjoyed spending the morning with five wonderful participants who came ready to learn, ask thoughtful questions, and experience a few practical exercises aimed at improving confidence and reducing fall risk.

Our Better Bones Coffee Meet-Up series was created to provide a relaxed environment where people can learn about osteoporosis, healthy aging, and lifelong movement through evidence-based discussion and practical application. Last month, we explored how strength training helps build and maintain bone density—one of the most effective ways to support long-term bone health. This month, we shifted our attention to another critical, yet often overlooked, piece of the puzzle: preventing the falls that lead to fractures in the first place.

Why Fall Prevention Matters

While osteoporosis is often thought of as a disease of weak bones, the reality is that most osteoporotic fractures occur because of a fall. Improving bone density certainly reduces fracture risk, but if we can also reduce the likelihood of falling, we add another powerful layer of protection. That's why fall prevention deserves just as much attention as building stronger bones.

The Fall Prevention Formula

One of the biggest takeaways from our discussion was that preventing falls involves much more than simply improving strength. We introduced what we call the Fall Prevention Formula, which focuses on developing power, balance, and stability—three physical qualities that work together to help us move confidently through everyday life.

Power: The Ability to React Quickly

Power refers to the ability to produce force quickly. As we age, our ability to react rapidly declines faster than our overall strength. If you stumble over a curb or catch your toe on the edge of a rug, your body has only a fraction of a second to recover. Having strong muscles is certainly beneficial, but being able to use those muscles quickly is often what determines whether you regain your balance or end up on the ground.

Balance & Stability: Staying in Control While You Move

We also discussed why traditional balance training doesn't always prepare us for real life. Many people picture balance exercises as standing on one foot or balancing on an unstable surface. While these activities can be helpful, most falls don't happen while we're standing still.

Instead, they occur while we're walking, turning, reaching into a cabinet, stepping over an obstacle, carrying groceries, or navigating uneven ground. For that reason, our training should extend beyond static balance and challenge our ability to maintain control while moving. During the workshop, participants had the opportunity to try several drills that emphasized dynamic balance, coordination, and stability in motion—the very situations where falls are most likely to occur.

The Good News: These Skills Can Be Improved

Perhaps the most encouraging message from the morning was that these abilities are trainable. Regardless of age, the body continues to adapt when challenged appropriately. By consistently improving power, balance, and movement control, we can increase confidence, remain active, and reduce the risk of falls that can have life-changing consequences.

Thank You for Joining Us

We'd like to sincerely thank the five participants who attended this month's workshop. Your engagement, questions, and willingness to participate made for a fantastic discussion, and we hope you left with practical ideas you can begin applying right away.

Join Us for Our Next Better Bones Coffee Meet-Up

We're excited to continue the Better Bones Coffee Meet-Up series and are currently finalizing our topic for the end of July. We're also working to bring in a few guest presenters who can share their expertise and offer new perspectives on bone health, healthy aging, and living an active life.

If you weren't able to join us this month, we hope you'll consider attending a future workshop. These free community workshops are designed to make the latest research approachable, practical, and interactive—all while enjoying a cup of coffee and connecting with others who share a common goal of staying healthy, active, and independent.

Keep an eye on our website and social media for details about our July Better Bones Coffee Meet-Up. We look forward to seeing you there!
