Athletic Trainer Job Opportunity in Portage, MI
Company: Pure Movement
Position: Athletic Trainer (Independent Contractor)
Location: Portage, MI (On-Site)
About Pure Movement:
Pure Movement is a private personal training and injury rehabilitation facility located in Portage, MI, proudly serving the greater Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan region. We specialize in personal training, physical therapy, running coaching, and return-to-sport rehabilitation. Our mission is to help you athletes and active adults safely transition from injury to the activities they love while building strength, improving movement, and maintaining long-term health.
Role Overview:
Pure Movement is seeking a dedicated and forward-thinking Athletic Trainer to join our team as an independent contractor. This part-time, on-site role is designed for someone who thrives at the intersection of rehab and performance. The Athletic Trainer will play a key role in our Return to Sport & Life Program—bridging the gap between physical therapy and full participation in sport, fitness, and daily activities. You will work closely with individuals who have a history of injuries or orthopedic concerns, ensuring they move safely, build confidence, and return to what they enjoy. Unlike traditional athletic training roles, this position involves no outreach coverage—all services are provided in-house at our private training and rehabilitation facility.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct assessments to identify movement limitations, imbalances, and injury risk factors
Design and implement individualized return-to-sport/life programs that bridge the gap between physical therapy and performance training
Collaborate with physical therapists, personal trainers, and other staff to provide coordinated, evidence-based care
Deliver one-on-one and small group sessions focused on performance, injury prevention, and functional strength
Monitor client progress and adapt programs to ensure safe and effective outcomes
Educate and empower clients to take an active role in their recovery and long-term health
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine (required)
Board of Certification (BOC) credential for Athletic Trainers (required)
State of Michigan licensure (required)
Strength and Conditioning or Personal Training certification (preferred)
CPR/AED and First Aid certification (required)
Ideal Candidate Will Also Have:
A passion for bridging the gap between rehab and performance, helping clients return confidently to sport, fitness, and life
A collaborative spirit to work alongside physical therapists, trainers, and health professionals
An interest in working with both competitive athletes and the active adult fitness population
Creativity in designing engaging, impactful programs that make a difference in the local community
Willingness to contribute during staff meetings, share expertise in case discussions, and lead educational workshops for clients
A client-first mindset focused on building trust, motivation, and long-term results
